Vanlife Adventures in BC

Well, as most of you know by now I’ve been on the “road” since January 15th, living mainly in my van Armondo. I put road in quotations because I’ve spent a fair amount of time indoors with people all over southern BC. I’ve had a bunch of adventures and a couple of misadventures to keep things balanced. Here are but a few images from my recent travels, with a story or two to go along.

Above is my stop at Jordan River, where the pictures of the sunset and geese came from at the bottom. A calendar photo came from this location. I love that a bunch of us van folks ended up here. It’s quite the community!

Into the deep winter!

As soon as I left Vancouver to head east, the cold snap hit. I tried heading up a snowy logging road which turned out to be a pretty terrible idea. That was around Hope. I barely made it out, and in doing so I managed to break all sorts of things in the van (mainly ceramic bowls) and following that, I made the decision to stay indoors while it was below -15. This guy on the right, was a beautiful horse along the side of the road near Princeton.

Portaits of Industry

Call me crazy, but I find beauty in industry. Particularly I loved the turquoise building with snow covered forests behind it. Also in Princeton, things were near the peak of winter so it was CHILLY. Even my diesel furnace wasn’t particlarly happy at these cold temps. This was my last night in the van for over a week and a half.

Birch forests!

Anyone who knows me will know my obsession with birch trees. I love them! I’ve been searching for a birch forest and it’s just occurred to me now, now that I’m nowhere near them, that I should have done the vertical panning shot that I love doing of forests. D’oh. I guess I’ll have to return! This magical place is on the side of the highway in the Cowichan River Valley. I tried deep depth of field, shallow depth of field, more ferns, less ferns, wide, narrow… Basically everything except the vertical pan.

Trying to work in Nelson

Every few weeks I’d head back to Vancouver, pound out a few shoots, and then have to spend the next while editing. In this case, I had decided to take a bunch of photos of the iconic Blaylock Mansion, for my friends who manage the place. I can’t complain about the location of the desk!

You can also see him in the middle of the line of vans at the top of this page, but here he is again, blending in to a birch forest behind him (but not the same white birch forest that I was obsessed with). So if you see me driving around. take a picture and tag me!

Denman Island Birthday

I had my birthday at the end of February, and I managed to make it to Denman Island where a friend of mine had rented a studio for a month. I can’t beleive how peaceful it was. I had finished all of my work and got to hang out, go for walks, do yoga. meditate and have a fire on the beach. One of my favourite birthdays!!

Since I’m still on the trip, I will keep adding to the gallery as time goes on. Below on the left we have the Sombrio canyon hidden waterfall, and the sunset at Jordan River (same place, different lenses).
